1. Perform regular maintenance on your car
a) Always change the engine's oil at manufacturer's recommendations. Try to use synthetic oil instead of standard oil because it has a lower friction coefficient.
b) Keep the engine tuned up. Bad spark timing can affect the fuel mileage.
c) Change the air filter every 10,000 miles or as recommended by the manufacturer.
2.Minimize the use of air conditioning
The use of air conditioning crates a lot of drag on the engine and hurts the fuel mileage.
3. Keep your tires inflated properly
Underinflated tires create more resistance to travel. (do not overinflate your tires, always check with manufacturer or on the tires' side wall for proper inflation)
4. Avoid quick acceleration
Always go easy on the pedal when taking off; quick acceleration burns a lot of fuel. Also, do not rush into a red light; just let the car roll there.
5. Avoid stop and go traffic
Try to find alternative routes that have less traffic and less traffic lights.
6. Keep the weight of the vehicle down
Do not carry in the vehicle heavy items that you don't need.
7. Drive between 50-60 mph
Try to keep the speed between 50-60 mph. The vehicle uses a lot less fuel at these speeds than driving 75 mph or more. Also try to use the cruise control as much as possible.
8. Don't drive with windows down at high speed
Avoid driving with windows down, especially at high speed. It creates a lot of drag which hurts the fuel mileage.
9. Avoid speeding when going up a hill
Always go easy on the pedal when going up a hill and try to keep a steady pace.
